Everyone loves the new year – aside from the excitement of the celebrations and the colour pop of the fireworks, it’s a great time to get a head start on all the projects, plans and resolutions you have in mind for the next 12 months. Far from feeling fed up about the cold, it’s an opportunity to make a fresh start. Trust us, it’ll leave you feeling invigorated by your achievements, ready to take on the year ahead.

When it’s cold and gloomy outside, brightening up your interiors can make for a great start to the new year, doing wonders to your home and giving your living room a new lease of life along the way. As the focal point for family gatherings, transforming your living room can give everyone a warm, welcoming space they can cherish.

It doesn’t need to be a huge undertaking either. A few simple steps, from finding the most comfortable sofa possible to changing the layout, can make all the difference – read our seven simple tips for breathing new life into your living room in 2019.

Change your layout

A change is as good as a rest, they say, and the same applies to your living room. Simply changing the layout of your interiors can make a difference and give the space a radical new look. If you have a sofa against one wall, try moving it into the centre of the room and creating a den-like feel with plenty of cushions. Instead of a TV unit in the corner – potentially taking up valuable space – mount the TV on the wall to free up a bit of extra room.

Declutter your space

When embarking on a new project, having a good clear-out is the best place to start. Work your way around your living room and clear the space of anything that you no longer need or want. You’ll probably be amazed by some of the stuff you’ve accumulated over the years.

That vase with a chip in its corner, the ceiling lampshade that’s looking a little outdated, or those paperbacks gathering dust on the bookcase in the corner. Get rid of anything that doesn’t have a place in your restyled living room and donate these items to charity. It’s not only practical, but hugely satisfying to give back this new year.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

You may think a mirror belongs in a bathroom or bedroom, but they can look great anywhere and there’s definitely a place for one in your living room. Adding a mirror to a room is a simple and celebrated design trick. Mirrors help make a space seem larger and brighter, reflecting light all around the room. Go for the largest one your room can handle, and, if you don’t want to fit it to a wall, choose one with a chunky frame and stand it up at a slight angle. This can work especially well on wooden floors.

Do a spot of redecorating

If you want to do something a little more substantial, redecorate your living room walls. This doesn’t have to be a large-scale project that consumes all your evenings and weekends. Instead, choose a wall and make a feature of it by giving it a splash of paint to really lift the room, or add some jazzy wallpaper to make it ‘pop’. It’ll make for a Saturday afternoon well spent and is a great way to breathe new life into your home.

Get arty

Artwork livens up a living room and brings much-needed colour to plain walls. Introduce pieces that catch your eye and fire the imagination. A large wall is ideal for a big bold print or a huge abstract colour painting. Devote one wall to a selection of black and white photos, in various sizes and matching picture frames – or mix and match frames of different designs for a more eclectic look.

Family photos are another great idea. Don’t just use those straight-to-camera school portrait pictures of the kids though – choose a mix of photos, showing happy memories, laughter, funny faces and quirky moments to create something personal and meaningful.

Add new cushions

A really easy and simple way of freshening up the look of your living room is by embellishing the sofa with some new cushions – you might be surprised, but this tiny change can go a long way. If you’re painting or papering a wall at the same time, choose colours that complement your designs.

You can mix and match the cushions too, buying slightly different sizes as well as differing fabrics to add a bit of texture and variety. Why not also add a throw to the sofa to sit alongside the cushions? Don’t be afraid to choose clashing colours, either. A dynamic mix of bright patterns can work superbly against a sofa in a plain colour.

Buy a statement sofa

Buying a new sofa might be a big-ticket purchase, but it’s probably the single most important item of furniture in your living room, so why not treat yourself and get the most comfortable sofa you can find, and one that makes an impactful statement too? Whether you want a lavish recliner like the Laurence, a grand corner piece like the Emperor or an elegant and classy leather number like the Stamford, we’ve got something to set your new-look living room off perfectly.

Watching movies, relaxing on the sofa or catching up over a cuppa – the living room is the heart of the family home. Why not give it a bit of extra love and make it look its very best in 2019?
